Azelaic Acid
Whilst minoxidil promotes hair growth, Azelaic Acid reduces hair loss. Generic rogaine A very weak acid, (much weaker than vinegar for example), that is found in some whole grains. Hereditary hair loss alopecia Recent studies have shown it to be a very potent inhibitor of the enzyme 5- alpha reductase which is responsible for the formation of DHT - the primary substance responsible for hair loss. Regaine hair Many experts believe that azelaic acid will therefore work synergistically with minoxidil - the azelaic acid reducing hair loss whilst the minoxidil promotes hair growth. Hereditary hair loss alopecia Note that exposure to direct sunlight needs to be avoided if using this item as it may cause irritation. Some people therefore apply at night and then apply a minoxidil only item during the day.
Progesterone
A female hormone added in very small quantities. Its effect is to neutralise the local action of the male hormone derivative DHT which is responsible for hair loss.
At the time of writing no-one has as yet been able to fully explain how Minoxidil has an effect on slowing hair loss and promoting hair growth. Hereditary hair loss alopecia Minoxidil normally induces new hair growth between 4 and 6 months of use. Products for hair If it has not worked by 6 months it is probably not going to. It appears to begin slowing the hair loss process almost immediately but - there are no guarantees. You simply have to try it to see. Male pattern baldness (MPB) is principally caused by two main factors - possibly assisted by some other more minor ones. The two factors are: Presence of a substance called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the vicinity of the hair roots. This substance is produced from the male hormone testosterone by the action of a particular enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Inherited genetic information. Hereditary hair loss alopecia When a man inherits the necessary gene for some of his hair roots to become susceptible to attack by DHT he will lose hair. Treatments for baldness MPB therefore has nothing to do with the amount of male hormone a man has - merely the fact that he has any at all is enough to cause the hair loss provided he has also inherited the necessary genetic detail. Only those hair roots which have been programmed will be attacked by DHT. Hereditary hair loss alopecia Normally these will be somewhere through the top region of the scalp with at least those hair roots around the sides and back of the scalp not being susceptible to attack by DHT. Hence, many men are left with a ‘monks fringe’ of hair at the sides and back.
